Did you notice the Indian Art at the Dior Couture Show in Paris?
The hand-embroidered art and craft along the walls of the Christian Dior Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture show in Paris in Jan 2022 were hard to miss. They ran from floor to ceiling as a backdrop to the craft-centric collection showcase.
These were embroidered by hand with organic materials and threads like raw linen, jute, cotton, silk, and several layers and created to allow for depth and profound detail. The techniques used are typically small-needle techniques called Zardozi in India. Variations of this technique allow for a seamless matura, a gradual movement from one shade to another. This creates depth and colour.

As part of the Dior Fall/Winter 2022-23 collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri has created a delicate pattern depicting plants, flowers and birds inspired by a photograph of Christian Dior in his winter garden by Mark Shaw.
Through this collection, Chiuri pages homage to bygone times woven into the materials and forms of today through the historical art of embroidery.

The designer set exacting tasks for his embroiderer, Rebé. The embroidery is set in a nuanced spacing of elements with the densest application at the waist, thinning as it falls away to the hem. This seemingly organic application, simulating a diminishment in nature, is further enhanced by Rebé's repertoire of embroidery stitches to create a dimensionality of the surface. The effect is optically then like a meadow's variegation.
